Mrs. Corrie van Hugten
Corrie van Hugten and Hans Verhoeven joined their ambitions in 1989 by organizing an event where disabled dancers and abled dancers can participate as equal partners. Wheelchair dancing was growing tremendously in Holland and so were the annual competitions in Cuijk. It became a platform for international development in wheelchair dancing. Danceteachers from other countries who were known for their initiative skills were invited to the event to become more acquainted with wheelchair dancing. After widen their knowledge in their home country many disabled children found the pleasure of wheelchair dancing. This concept turned out to be very successfully. More than twenty countries are participating the World Cup Wheelchair dancing. The amount of competitors and participating countries is still growing.
Noteworthy were the trips to Washington by invitation of the youngest member of the famous Kennedy family Mrs. Jean Kennedy for ‘Very Special Art’ and the demonstration during the birthday party for Mr. Nelson Mandela in Pietermaritzburg. This party was dedicated to disabled children from underprivileged regions. After Corrie teached these children the Macarena, she handed over a birthday present to Mr. Nelson Mandela. You can imagine the hilarious commotion with the security.
